My Best Marama Space

Screen Shot 2016-11-28 at 8.27.27 AM.png
This is the Marama space I work best in. It is the quiet space. I work best in this space because it's a great space for me to concentrate in. The only problem about it is that sometimes, people talk in there, which gets very annoying. This is my favourite space because it is also a really comfortable space, and I work better when I am comfortable.
It is my favourite space when I am doing DEAW or DEAR. I almost always sit in there during these times.
I generally get much more work done when I am in this space, which makes it the best space for me!

I chose this quote because it reminds me to always be better than I was yesterday.
I reminds me that next year, I will make it a much better year than this year!

NZ Made Trip

On Thursday my NZ Made group went to the Bettie Monroe Store in Whangamata. We went there to ask the manager of the store, Maree Aitkenhead, a few questions.
Here are our questions, and a short summary of Maree's answer:
What do they have that is NZ made fabric?
Merino. We don't have cotton or other fabrics in NZ, because we do not grow them.
How does this compare to other fabric?
NZ's merino is the best in the world, generally because we have lots of sheep.
Which countries would you mostly get your fabrics from?
Maree had a bit of trouble with this question, and had to call the owners. They said that the majority of their fabric is sourced from Hong Kong. The owners go there once a year.
What is the process of making your clothing?
First of all, the staff members selling the clothing tell the designers about what sells well, and doesn't. The designers then either design a new garment, or they choose the fabric before designing. Either way. The fabric chosen is then tested to see if it shrinks, or pills. If it does, they get rid of it. The fabric chosen is then sent away to be crafted into the garment.
The fabric with prints on it, is printed in NZ.
How many staff members work for Bettie Monroe?
Around about 28, and more in the summer.
How did the business start?
The business started when two friends, Lucy and Helen realized they both shared the same interest in fashion, and so they started a business. The original shop was in Whangamata.
Where do they make their clothes?
We make our clothes in a factory in Auckland.

Maree was really nice, and she answered all of our questions well. Here are some photos from our trip.

Learner Profile Comment

Here is the comment I wrote about my year so far.

This year I have tried my best to make the most of my learning opportunities that I can. I really like the opportunity we have with our milestones, because it lets me learn further, and it means I never have nothing to do. I like having the opportunity to self-manage my learning, by not having set times for things. I like how we have the opportunity to go out for huff and puff and have brain breaks as we wish. It’s really cool the way that we can plan our own time and have as much time as we like for each task. I like our Mi Plans because we can copy off the timetable and have our own customized Mi Plan.

When we shared our individual endeavors I was really nervous. I spoke quietly, and I tried to get it over and done with a bit too quickly. It wasn’t the best performance, but I still used Resilience. My mum was really proud of my research, and I am too. When I did finally get really going in my create and share, I was really on a roll, and my video looked amazing. I was really proud of my efforts. I used a lot of Creativity during this process.
I think the hardest part for me was coming up with a topic I was truly interested in. The worst mistake I made during this project was when I was doing my research, instead of copy and pasting my findings, I wrote everything in my own words, so when it came to summarising, it was more about summarising my own summaries. When I completed this project, I was really excited about doing one again.

This term, we began our group endeavors. I am in the NZ Made clothing group. We are researching NZ Made clothing, and our driving question is “How can we support NZ made clothing?” We have been doing a lot of research, and I am really enjoying working in this group. We do our GE by the quote “What we learn with pleasure, we never forget”. Our GE is exactly like our IE, except we are in groups. We hav had to use a lot of Resilience so far in this process.

I love our set learning tasks because they are all fast to do, but still a challenge. I really like my blog, because that way my mum can see all my learning without having to ask me. My mum regularly reads my blog so I like to post a lot on it. AWS is also really cool. I like how we don’t have a set page, and how we can pace ourselves in our own time to do each page. We only have to get one page done a week, which means we can spend plenty of time on one page so we can get lots of questions correct.

I like the how we have Manga High and Duolingo to work on. Manga High is really cool because the teacher can easily set us tasks that challenge us. I also like how there is a class competition, so that way it makes me want to do more.
I have been using the Duolingo website for the past couple of years, so I liked it how I didn’t have to make a new account so I could join the school class. I like how learning a different language is required, so that way everybody can learn something new.

This year I am really proud of how I made it up to the fifth AWS book. I am also proud about how I was entered into Upstart for my story about the Pinnacles.

This year so far I have achieved two of my milestones. I have achieved my Languages milestone and the Be Published milestone. I am really proud of myself for this.

What Is NZ Made?

For my groups GE, we have each been assigned questions. My question is, What is NZ Made? Here is my answer.
New Zealand Made means that a product was made in New Zealand possibly “from local and imported resources”. This generally means that perhaps the fabric of clothing was made somewhere else, but it was transformed from fabric to a garment in New Zealand. Product of New Zealand means that every inch of the product was made in NZ. NZ products cost more because they use NZ resources, and therefore need the money to get more resources for the product. Also NZ made products are higher quality, and there are less of the product.

Twins Both Older Than Each Other!

This is what I discovered:
Two American twins have the amazing fact of both being older than each other.
The strange birthdays occurred because the twins were born near the time that daylight savings ended. The first baby, Samuel, was born at 1:39 a.m. during daylight savings time. His brother, named Ronan, was born 31 minutes later, after daylight savings time had ended, making him 29 minutes older.

My Opinion:
Technically, Samuel will have been the older one because he was born earlier.

My Wondering:
Has anything like this ever happened before?
After googling, I don't think this has ever happened before.

Source:
I found this information on Kiwi Kids News.

Words:
Maternity: motherhood.
Witnessed: see (an event, typically a crime or accident) happen.
Nursing: the profession or practice of providing care for the sick and infirm.

And the award goes to…

To whom it may concern,
I would like to nominate Lara Forsyth for the Short And Proud Of It Award. She is 12 years old and she is still in primary school, with no job, generally because she is in primary school. She excels at being short, looking younger than she is, and walking up on stage to collect awards. (Hint hint)

Here’s why I think Lara Forsyth should receive the Short And Proud Of It Award.
Firstly, she is really short. She’s around about 100cm tall. Research shows that the average height for a twelve year-old girl is 150cm! That’s 50cm too short! I am an 11 year old girl, and I am 155cm tall. This shows just how short Lara really is. My brother and sister, who are around about the same height, are both 120cm. They are 5 & 7! Lara is about 6 years older than them, and they are way taller.

Secondly, Lara deserves this award, because she is so dedicated to receiving this award that she has never eaten any of the following growth-promoting things:
  1. Turnips
  2. Rhubarb
  3. Peanuts
  4. Beans
  5. Peas
  6. Spinach
  7. Oatmeal
Look it up. All of these food items promote growth, and Lara has never even licked any of them.

And that is why I nominate Lara Forsyth for the Short And Proud Of It Award.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours Sincerely,

Elaina

Writing

My class has a box full of cards with writing ideas. I write one each week. Here's one:
For And Against

Five Issues:
  1. Younger and older children should all learn in the same environment
  2. People should eat less
  3. Sports stars are paid far too much money
  4. Trees are too tall
  5. We shouldn’t have fences

Younger and older children should all learn in the same environment:
For:

  • It would be better for children to be able to work with older, more experienced children so that younger children can not only learn from just the teacher, but from their peers also.

Against:

  • Children should learn in age groups, so that way they can work with children their own age, and at their own understanding and pace, because they will all be on the same level.

People should eat less:
For:
  • People should eat less because if they eat too much, they might get very fat, and they might not necessarily be eating the right things. If people eat less, then we know that no matter what, people won’t get fat.
Against:
  • If people eat less, then they might get hungry. It’s unfair that people should have their diet controlled by others. If they want to eat less, then they can ask for help. But if they don’t want any help, then they should be able to be left alone.

Sport stars are paid far too much money:

For:
  • Sport stars are paid far too much money. If anybody saw that mouth-watering salary, they would quit their current jobs and train to be a sports star. Anyone can do it if they train. But if everybody was a sports star, then we wouldn’t have people to do other things.
Against:
  • We can’t change the salary for a sports star now, otherwise sports stars might quit, and then we won’t have anyone who wants to play sports for a living. Sports is hard work, and you don’t want to put in a whole lot of work just to be paid next to nothing!

Trees are too tall:

For:
  • Trees are way too tall. If any of them fall down, it could really hurt, or kill someone. Trees should be regularly chopped at the top to prevent this from happening.
Against:
  • Trees are landmarks, and if they aren’t tall, then how are people supposed to see them? Without our big, tall trees, children wouldn’t be able to climb them, and have the time of their lives.

We shouldn’t have fences:

For:
  • People should not have fences. They are just a waste of resources, and what purpose do they have anyway? All they do is divide property. You don’t need to do that! If a kid accidentally kicks a ball into the neighbour’s property, they then have to climb over the fence, which is totally unnecessary.
Against:
  • People need fences for privacy. Without fences, people can just look out their window, into your window! And climbing fences is something really fun that kids like to do.

Positives:
- I think I did really well writing my Learner Profile comment. It's really long and detailed.

Trump Is President

Donald Trump is the new president of the USA. In my opinion, I would have voted for Hillary. Everyone seemed to act like they hated Donald Trump, but when it actually came around to the election, people said otherwise.

Current Events

This Is What I Discovered:
Japanese artist Piko-Taro wrote the shortest song ever to make the Billboard Hot 100. The song, Pen Pineapple Apple Pen, took only a few hours and cost only $1500 to make. The song made it to the top 100 with the help of Justin Bieber, who endorsed the song.

My opinion:
I think this song is very catchy. No wonder it's in the top 100!

Wondering:
Does Piko-Taro have any other songs?
Answer:
He has four other songs.

  • Theme song of Piko-Taro
  • Romita Hashimikov
  • Kashite Kudasaiyo
  • Neo Sunglasses
Words:
Infuriatingly - Making one extremely angry and impatient.
Sensation - a widespread reaction of interest and excitement.
Trademark - A symbol, word, or words legally registered or established by use as representing a company or product.

Weekly Reflection Term 4 Week 4

Goal: Showing evidence of my learning.
I think I have done really well with this goal. When I write reflections on my profiles, I show lots of evidence.

Positives:
- I am really happy with my response to the Leaving a TECH legacy survey. I think we should spend the money we raised at Tech to plant a tree.
- I made it into Hauraki Plains Athletics for three things - 1500m, 800m, and Discus!

Negatives:
- I had a lot of difficulty with shotput... It's really heavy!

What I learnt:
I learnt that during discus and shotput, if you step out the front of the circle, it's a no throw!
