Book Club

This week for our Book Club we had our shared lunch for finishing The Year My Life Broke.

The book Scarlet Ibis is very good. We just read chapter three which was mainly about the zoo. The character Red really seemed to like the Africa section, so I did an investigation of Africa. Here is the investigation.
Topic: Africa
Africa is the second largest and second most populated country in the world. It’s size is 30.2 million kilometres. It has 1.1 MILLION people in it. This is as of 2013. Africa’s population takes up 15% of the world. 50% of Africans are over the age of 19. Africa is a continent made up of 54 countries. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.

My Book Club

This term my Book Club, the Meltdowns, are reading a book called Scarlet Ibis. It is a really cool book about birds and safety. I really have been enjoying this book, although it took me a while before I understood it. Here is my summary for the first chapter:
Scarlet and her brother Red would like to sail the Caroni Swamp in Trinidad. “We’ll wait for the sun to sink, turning the mountains of the Northern Range deep blue.” They will watch the Scarlet Ibis settle into the trees.
Mrs Gideon, aka “The Penguin” is the social worker who comes to spy on them. They have to make everything “safe” otherwise this will be used against them.
I have also done my Travel Tracer for the second chapter.

Where today’s action begins:
Red wakes Scarlet up at 6:15 a.m. because the baby bird they have been keeping has hatched. Red seems concerned about the bird’s safety but Scarlet assures him that it will be fine.
Page where it was described:
11-12
Where key events happen:
Mrs Gideon comes and looks at Scarlet’s school reports, where she saw that she was a smart girl. Scarlet has beaten the Penguin - this time, at least.
Page where it was described:
17-18
Where today’s events end:
Sita’s Mum gives Scarlet and her family some banana cake. She is concerned about Scarlet’s family.

A policeman needs skill and bravery because you could get hurt by bad people...

I am happy I got them all right because now I can move up to the next level of SRA.
In my Cloze I got a few wrong on my first try, but on my second try I got them all right. This week it was a Cloze where we have to choose our own words. Sometimes I find this easier. I have definitely improved since last weeks Cloze because I didn't even get those all right at all.

During art this week I have settled on my final decision that I am going to draw this house along with a few extras of different heights to make it seem more effective.
At the moment I haven't really done much because I have only a little amount of time to do my art because of broadcasting. Next week I will show you a photo of my art.
We will be carving our houses into pieces of lino, and then we will be inking them onto a piece of paper.

On IXL Year 6 I have done a lot of questions and mastered a lot of skills. I have answered 736 questions (at the moment. This will change rapidly), mastered 7 skills, and I have been on it for 7 hrs and 7 mins.
For Year 7 I have answered 82 questions, I have been on for 39 mins, and I have mastered 1 skill. Next week I hope to do a bit more on Year 7.

Rippa Rugby Tournament

Today I competed in The Hauraki Plains Rippa Rugby Tournament. We played four games, and we won two, and lost two. We did not make it into the finals. I ripped quit a few tags. What I found annoying was how when you try to rip someone who is short, that you have to bend down to get it. I resulted in grass stained knees. We had no subs for our last game because one of us had what could be  a broken leg and another person had a twisted ankle. I really enjoyed this game although I didn't really get the ball very often. I didn't score any tries but I think I'm better at ripping tags anyway. My team was called the Ngatea Hurricanes. Some teams fended and were very unfair and unsportsmanlike. This game was really awesome and I don't get to play it often. My favourite part of the game is ripping tags. Next year I hope to do a bit better than I did this year.

Netball

On Saturday I played a game of netball against Waeranga 2. My team name is NPS 3. I am a shooter in my team. I think I play better at GA because when I am at GS I have to stand around until my team gets the ball which sometimes is a setback because it takes me awhile to wake up again. We won our game 19-2. I really enjoyed this game because I played my favourite positions and my team won. I think everyone was in their best positions for this game and I hope those positions will be played often because we win.
Here are some pictures of the game:

Reflection.

I got 3 wrong this time when I got my Cloze marked again. Here's a picture.
This Cloze was VERY hard.
When I did my SRA I was very annoyed because there was no marking card for the particular one I did. Luckily it was still marked off.
This week I chose my new art topic. This term everybody is doing lino. This is where we get a piece of lino and carve it out into the picture we have drawn. The topic I chose was carving houses into our lino. So far all we have done is go on Google Images, and take a look at some houses for ideas. I quite like the house that looks like this. It is supposed to be an old looking house, and I am not sure if this house is old enough.

This week for my NPS Broadcasting group, we broadcasted about the Rippa Rugby Tournament which will take place at the Ngatea Domain on the 6th of May. We also talked about our Kiwi Quiz. This is a quiz where our class gets in to teams and Mrs Barker asks us questions about New Zealand. The video should be on YouTube soon.

Cloze

The This week my cloze was really hard. I got 13 out of 20 wrong. I have put my cloze in to be marked again, and I hope I got it all right. Me and some friends worked on it together. The cloze had some really complicated words like dilapidated, and hostile. Some of the main reasons I got them wrong was because I didn't fully know what each word meant. With the word "gaudy I guessed that it meant sort of strong and messy. I will do another post once I have found out how many I got wrong and right. I will also add a picture in the following post.

World War One

On the 4th of August in 1914 Britain announced war against Germany.

This all started because a Serbian assassinated Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria.

It was then known as 'The Great War'. This war was against two dominant groups of countries who were known as "The Triple Alliance", and "The Triple Entente". The Triple Alliance were Germany, Austria and Italy. The Triple Entente was Great Britain, France, and Russia.

Every country that was involved in World War One organised troops and prepared to fight.
New Zealand had roughly 128,825 soldiers. Australia had about 412,954. Britain had about five million soldiers, and lost one million.
These countries were in the Triple Entente.

The Battle Of Somme was a very deadly battle during the first World War. About one million soldiers were killed during this battle.
420,000 from Britain, 200,000 from France and 500,000 from Germany.

Around about 65 million troops fought in World War One. 558,000 men fought from Scotland. 273,000 from Wales, and 143,000 from Ireland.

Animals played their part in World War One too.
Horses helped transport equipment, dogs helped find wounded soldiers, and they needed pigeons to transport messages. Many animals were also used as mascots.

The war ended at eleven a.m on the eleventh day of the eleventh month (November).
To celebrate the end of the war Jelly Babies were invented, but back then, they were known as Peace Babies.

Lest We Forget.

My Memory Block - Edited

This is my new version of my Memory Block. I have edited it to make it more interesting. Please comment on this post.

FIJI
The plane ride to Fiji was long but not boring. There was always something to do on the plane. The TV could let me play games, and watch movies. It’s the way down that hurts me. My ears were screaming in pain and I was probably about to as well. All I needed was one juicy, delicious, lolly to suck on. I’ve learnt my lesson.
Coconuts
The coconut milk tasted so tangy, delicious and smooth in my mouth, with a bit of an aftertaste of cream. I wished the heavenly luscious taste would remain in my mouth enduringly.
Hammock
Lying there in the relaxing sun on that net hung between two trees. I felt a bit disturbed as I swung there in between those two palm trees with delicious yet heavy coconuts dangling from their ceilings.
Beach
The hot sandy beach below the little hill was one of my favourite places to be in Fiji. Running down the hill into the waveless, cool water felt like running into paradise as I sank into the refreshing Fijian Ocean.
Sunshine
The tropical sun blazing against my skin as I walk outside, admiring my surroundings. Each day full of it, boiling my body until I feel the supreme need to bomb into the swimming pool, not distant away from my hotel room.
Kayaking
I strapped on my life jacket and hopped into the banana coloured kayak, while Dad pushed it into the sea. I rowed to the small lump of sand I could see in the distance.
Relax
Relaxing in the tropical sun in Fiji made me feel peaceful and sleepy. Each moment I relax in the sun, the heat makes it’s way into my skin like a great hot chocolate warming me up in the winter.

Reflection T1 Week 8

This week I got three questions wrong in my SRA and it took me two tries to get it right again. In my Cloze I got three wrong, but it only took one try to get it right.
I think next week when I do these two activities I will try to concentrate on this a lot more next week.
In my AWS I got five wrong. I wasn't expecting that as it was a really easy page. I think that when I do my AWS I need to concentrate harder. The most occurring way that I got it wrong was when we were told to have five sixths of a number, and I accidentally only put one sixth.

SRA

I need to improve on my SRA because I got three wrong and it took a while for me to get them right again. I think to do this I need to look at the questions carefully and choose my answer carefully as well. They all have ticks because I have them all right now, but I will put another sign next to the ones I got wrong.

Reflection Week 7 Term 1

This week I got a really good comment in maths from Mrs Taaffe, and I got them all right.

This week for my pole art group I'm really enjoying it because it's really fun and I enjoy painting. I want to thank Mrs B for supplying the expensive paint otherwise we wouldn't be as far through it as we are.

I think I did really well in my SRA because I got a star. I only just started this level, so it's good that I got them all right on the first one. I might breeze this level!
I think I might have to think more on my AWS because I got quite a few wrong. I have now decided that I will check through my answers before the deadline.

Next week my goal is to concentrate really hard on my work because I get distracted really easily. I will practice this by sitting in the Quiet Zone most of the time.

Cloze

This week I feel proud about my Cloze because I got none wrong and this is the first time this year. Here is a picture:
I think that next week I will try to be a bit quicker at my Cloze because it takes a long time for me to do it, even though I do it well.

Thames Valley Swimming

On Wednesday I participated in Thames Valley Swimming Sports. Unfortunately I placed last in all my races, but at least I got in and was able to participate. I think that the Thames pool is too shallow to have proper swimming races in, and the diving blocks are a bit too high. I still enjoyed the day though - the water was SO warm!

Reflection Week 6

This week I think I need to improve on my AWS because I got heaps wrong. It's the highlighted ones are the ones I got wrong. Sorry, it's a bit hard to see.
I think I did better in my fractions work though because I only got one wrong out of nine.
I think I did well in my Cloze because I only got two wrong.

I also think I did well in my SRA and I think that I might be able to move up a level. Yay!

My Memory Block

This is my Memory Block. We had to choose a topic for our Memory Block, and I chose my holiday in Fiji.
I chose the colour and font that I thought matched the words.
I will explain what each word meant to my holiday underneath.
Please leave comments and give me feedback!

Fiji
In the winter holidays in 2014 I went to Fiji for a week. The highest temperature was 31 degrees! We only had a sheet for blankets at night.
Coconuts
One day we drank coconut milk from the coconut. We bought them from the drink bar called the CocoHut. The coconut milk tastes really tangy and sour. My brother and sister hated theirs.
Hammock
There were hundreds of hammocks hung up between palm trees and I loved just lying there in the sun. It was a bit scary though - a coconut could fall on my head at any second! I also pushed Patrick so high on one that he fell on the ground. :)
Beach
The beach was so great! There were no waves, and you would be able to see massive snapper not far off the shore. The beach was at the bottom of a little hill so we ran down the hill straight into the water! It was great.
Sunshine
There was so much sun! It was 32 degrees everyday! The nights were hot too. All we had was a sheet to sleep under, and I am NOT complaining.
Kayaking
We went kayaking once and it was really cool. I was rowing, and I’m not good at steering. I hit an island.
Relax
It was really relaxing in Fiji. Hammocks rock!
